what is the difference between a squat clean and a power clean?

well that surely depends on how long of an answer you want mr. dutch.

Don’t get too cerebral travis. I know you are a college graduate.

I’m looking for something simple like a squat clean is a missed power clean which should motivate you to try to power clean everything… at least pull hard enough to try to power it up.
When you got for max effort you should be forced into the squat. If you aren’t…you need more weight.

Power cleans – high cycle rate, flexibility is not a necessity, form shortcomings generally only result in the lifter working harder, strength can make up for a lack of form.

Squat Cleans – single reps are lightning fast, flexibility is a necessity, form shortcomings result in total lift failure, timing is paramount, form can make up for a lack of strength.

If that was too cerebral, ha, here’s some other analogies:
Pwr Cleans = Juggernaut, fast and strength-based
SQ Cleans = Jean Grey, purposeful and precise

Pwr Cleans = Vodka, mix it with anything and go hard and fast
SQ Cleans = 18yr scotch, take your time and value the quality

I like it travis, but if you could power clean 500 lbs would you ever squat clean?

Travis Reese March 25, 2009 at 5:23 pm

yea, squat clean 700. But, absolutely, i see what you’re getting at; why catch the bar in a full squat when you could catch it in a half squat and, as a result, decrease your time.

If the end goal is increased power output over varied time domains, then there are benefits to practicing both a heavier squat clean and a lighter power clean. The pwr clean would decrease time, but the squat clean would allow for increased weight.

Could you make a case for a power clean elizabeth over the conventional Liz? to expand a little, how about a power snatch isabel over the conventional isabel?
